Home Gauge Information Historical Flooding What to do in a Flood Flood Recovery

The Richmond Valley has a long history of flooding, with a number of minor floods in recent years and significant floods in 1954 and 1974.

The February 1954 flood was the largest and most destructive flood on record in the Richmond Valley and has been described by locals as a wall of water. The flood caused major damage around Casino, including washing away the old Irving Bridge.

The March 1974 flood was a result of Tropical Cyclone Zoe, which crossed the coast at Coolangatta. Most of the rain fell across the Wilsons River, causing one of the largest recorded floods at Lismore and the highest recorded level at Coraki. There was significant flooding in the area between Coraki and Ballina.”
